Bierle Lab

Infection is the leading preventable cause of disability in children, and the immune response to intrauterine infection can cause placental dysfunction, preterm birth, and pregnancy loss. The Bierle Lab studies host-virus interactions at the maternal-fetal interface. Drawing on expertise in reproductive immunology, molecular virology, and placental biology, we aim to understand how viral infections affect placental development and function, contributing to the development of new therapeutics that will improve pregnancy outcomes and children’s health.
